Ukraine's Constitutional Court (CC) ruled on Wednesday to launch proceedings at the request of the Verkhovna Rada to decide if the bill on amendments to the basic law concerning the decentralization of power adheres to the Constitution of Ukraine.

“The second panel of judges at its meeting considered the issue of launching the constitutional proceedings in response to the request of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine to provide its opinions on the compliance of the draft law on amendments to the Constitution of Ukraine concerning the decentralization of power (registration number 2217) to the requirements of Articles 157 and 158 of the Constitution of Ukraine. The judges ruled to launch the constitutional procedure,” the press service of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine reported on Wednesday.

The Constitutional Court also discussed at the meeting the format of considering the case on this appeal of the Verkhovna Rada.

“The court has made a decision in this regard. The case will be considered in the format of a written hearing,” the press office said.

It has been reported that on July 17 the Constitutional Court received a constitutional petition from the Verkhovna Rada seeking conclusion on the accordance of the bill to amend the Ukrainian Constitution on de-centralization. As per Constitutional Court procedure, this petition was handed over to the court secretariat to be studied.

On July 16 the Verkhovna Rada voted for the resolution to send the presidential bill on amending the Constitution to the Ukrainian Constitutional Court.
