You're reading: Ukrainian communists insist on abolition of post of president

Communist Party leader Petro Symonenko has said that his faction in parliament has prepared amendments to the Ukrainian Constitution that foresee the abolition of the office of president in the country.

“We’ve already prepared systematic amendments to the constitution,” Symonenko said at a press conference in Kyiv on Monday.

According to Symonenko, the revised constitution is to abolish the office of president.

“We don’t need to return to the constitution of 2004, but to eliminate this office [of president] or as a last resort make it a figurehead post… The president should not exert any influence on the country,” the Communist Party leader said.

Symonenko also said his faction had prepared a draft letter for Verkhovna Rada Chairman Volodymyr Rybak to form a committee at parliament to consider amendments to the constitution and draw up motions on them.
