You're reading: Ukrainian prosecutor general claims he’s target of assassination plot

Ukraine's Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin has said he has every reason to believe that he could be assassinated.

“I have well-substantiated grounds [which prove] that all sorts of provocations are being plotted against me, including my health … I have well-substantiated reasons to believe that someone wants to physically eliminate me,” Shokin said at a briefing in Kyiv on July 20.

He also said that he has every reason to think that ‘various types of provocations are being carried against him’.

“Unfortunately, due to my work to combat corruption in all fields without exception, I [have been] hampering many from illegally extracting amber, sand, [and I have] prevented other illegal bargains. That’s why I have every reason to believe that someone wants to eliminate me. Unfortunately, this is the truth,” he said.

Shokin added that he has already informed the president and Security Service of Ukraine about his concerns.
