Ukrainian citizens believe that Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych is a key source of violation of rights and freedoms in the country in 2011, according to a poll conducted by the Constitution Day by the Razumkov center.

The Telekrytyka publication reported that 20.5% of respondents said that Yanukovych is the source of violation of their rights, 10.8% say this is criminal groups, 9.8% say this is the Ukrainian government and 9% say this is the police that is the source of violation of their rights.

According to the poll, lawmakers (47.9% of respondents), police (45.7%) and the Ukrainian president (39.3%), courts (37.9%) and criminal groups (37.6%) contribute to violation of rights and freedoms or make their realization impossible.

Ukrainian citizens say more often that appeals to the European Court of Human Rights are the most efficient way to protect constitutional rights and freedoms (24.5%), while only 6.7% of respondents trust Ukrainian courts.

The work of the national court system was assessed at 2.2 marks under the five-mark scale.

"The indicator is being worsening over the past three years, which causes alarm with the state of justice in Ukraine," the sociologist said.

The poll was conducted under an order of the Freedom House Ukraine nongovernmental organization from June 5 to June 9, 2011.

A total of 1,210 respondents aged over 18 years in all regions of Ukraine, Kyiv and Crimea were interviewed during the survey. The poll’s margin of error does not exceed 3%.
