You're reading: UN Secretary-General thanks Yanukovych for support

Astana, Nov. 30 (Interfax-Ukraine) – United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has noted Ukraine's important role in supporting UN policy.

"I’m really grateful to you [Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych] for [Ukraine’s] strong support in the United Nations for your personal contribution," he said at a meeting with Yanukovych in Astana on Tuesday.

The meeting was held as part of an OSCE summit.

In particular, Ban Ki-moon, thanked the Ukrainian president for Ukraine’s participation in various UN missions.

Yanukovych, in turn, said that Ukraine wanted to strengthen the UN role.

"We will work together to ensure that the role of the United Nations strengthens from year to year in addressing the most pressing challenges facing the world community," he said.

The sides also discussed possible ways to settle the Transdniestrian conflict in the context of the end of the parliamentary elections in Moldova.

Yanukovych noted that Ukraine wanted to ensure stability in the region.

The meeting took place at Rixos President Hotel, which became Yanukovych’s temporary residence during the OSCE summit.
