Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has demanded that the leaders of local authorities ensure the election campaign is fair and transparent, the presidential press service has reported.

“The government must create all conditions for the holding of fair democratic elections,” he said during his meetings with the heads of regional state administrations in Crimea.

Yanukovych drew the attention of regional governors to the importance of the strict observance of the current electoral legislation and the provision of all participants in the electoral process with equal conditions for holding the election campaign.

He said that there were all conditions for that, as the legislation necessary for the elections to the Verkhovna Rada was adopted a year before the elections.

“The new electoral legislation was the result of a successful political compromise. This success has also been noted by international observers,” Yanukovych said.

He said that the country’s international image, the further successful implementation of domestic reforms and the implementation of social initiatives would depend on how these elections are conducted.

The parliamentary elections in Ukraine are scheduled for October 28, 2012.
