Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has dismissed Health Minister Illia Yemets. A relevant decree was signed on Tuesday and posted on the president's Web site.

Yemets earlier submitted a resignation letter.

"He [Illia Yemets] is a wonderful specialist. He heads one of the most modern cardiosurgery centers. This was the reason to invite him to this high post of the minister. But he failed to properly organize the work of the ministry so that the ministry could start working effectively, and most importantly, so that the reforms that we outlined, which are very important, could start being realized," Yanukovych told reporters during his visit to Mykolaiv on Tuesday.

Yemets is a heart surgeon and has a Ph.D. in medicine. He has headed the Ukrainian Health Ministry since December 2010.
