Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said that the 14th EU-Ukraine summit is a special one in that it is taking place amid political stability in Ukraine and far-reaching reform in the European Union.

"This summit is very special for both of its participants, as it [comes in] a period of deep reform and transformation," he said at the start of a plenary meeting of the EU-Ukraine summit in Brussels on Monday.

He said that the summit was also important for Ukraine, because it was taking place under the conditions of "long-awaited political stability." Yanukovych noted that the uniqueness of the summit for the European Union lay in the fact that it was being held as internal reforms were being conducted in the European Union.

Yanukovych thanked President of the European Council of Herman Van Rompuy and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso for "a sincere and frank conversation before the plenary meeting."

"I thank you for our frank and sincere conversation today. I appreciate your friendly attitude to Ukraine, and to me personally," Yanukovych said.

The Ukrainian delegation includes Head of Ukraine’s Presidential Administration Serhiy Liovochkin, Foreign Minister Kostiantyn Hryschenko, Justice Minister Oleksandr Lavrynovych, Fuel and Energy Minister Yuriy Boiko, Deputy Economy Minister Valeriy Piatnytsky, and Director of the National Institute for Strategic Studies Andriy Yermolayev.
