You're reading: Yanukovych is not against parliamentary elections under majority system

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said he would support parliamentary elections being held under a majority electoral system.

"Amendments to the law [on the elections to the Verkhovna Rada], are currently being drawn up, and a working group has been created that includes, in particular, representatives of the opposition and various international organizations, experts, [and] they will work out this draft law. I will also participate in the consideration of this law and, most likely, this law will be sent to parliament so that it [then] can acquire the president’s signature. … But the proportionality must be fifty-fifty, 50% of [the seats] in a proportional system and 50% in majority constituencies. This will be my position, I will not sign any other [such mixed electoral system] law. But if a proposal is submitted that there should be a fully majority system, I will also not be against it," he said during the Conversation with the Country television project on Friday.

Since 2006 the parliamentary elections in Ukraine have been held according to a proportional system.
