Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich on Friday named former KGB officer Ihor Kalinin to head the state security service SBU after its previous boss was appointed finance minister, Yanukovich's office said. Kalinin, 52, served in the Soviet Union's State Security Committee (KGB) between 1984 and 1992 and has run the service responsible for protecting senior officials since April 2010.

Last month, Valery Khoroshkovsky, previous head of SBU, was named finance minister in what analysts saw as a move by Yanukovich to tighten his grip on state finances ahead of the October 2012 parliamentary election.

As a specialist in protecting senior officials one of Ihor Kalinin's primary tasks will be to prevent egg throwing incidents similar to the 2004 scenario which almost killed Viktor Yanukovych. His other duties will be as per normal, harass, charge, imprison and kill where possible opponents of the Party of Reprobates.
