Ukraine hopes to continue cooperation with the European Union in order to bring its legislation into line with EU standards, President Viktor Yanukovych has said.

“We appreciate the assistance that has been constantly provided in preparing legislation and bringing Ukrainian legislation into line with European standards, and I hope that this cooperation will continue to be fruitful and have a positive impact,” he said in a meeting with EU Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy Stefan Fule on Friday.

While speaking about Ukraine’s modernization, Yanukovych said that the authorities were self-critical of some areas in which it is not always possible to achieve the desired goal.

“Sometimes there are natural obstacles during the implementation of adopted laws – officials, politicians who got used, as they say, to living by the old rules. Therefore this reaction was quite expected,” Yanukovych said.
