You're reading: Yanukovych promises no ‘political wars’ during parliamentary elections

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, the honorary leader of the Regions Party, has said he is confident that the parliamentary elections in 2012 will be held in accordance with democratic principles.

“As guarantor of the constitution, I will firmly react to any
attempts to restrict freedom of speech or influence the results of
people’s will, but I believe that all issues in elections can be
resolved only within the current legislation,” he said at the opening of
the 14th congress of the Regions Party in Kyiv on Monday, July 30.

He said that at these elections it is necessary to demonstrate
commitment to the principles of democracy, rule of law, and a high level
of political and legal culture.

“I’m confident that we will pass this test excellently,” Yanukovych said.

“We will give a decent answer to everyone who is trying to cast doubt
on our ability to organize a transparent and open electoral process.
Anyone who tries to use a future election campaign for the
destabilization of the sociopolitical situation in the country,”
Yanukovych said.

Yanukovych said that the government would not allow “political wars”
and confrontations, since Ukraine needs political stability and
socio-economic development.

“This should be an exemplary campaign, with the observance of all
democratic standards and our international obligations. We must start
this work we must start with ourselves,” he said.
