President Viktor Yanukovych has said that the reform of local government will start in Ukraine soon.

Yanukovych said this during a meeting with candidates for the posts of heads of regional state administrations, the president’s press service reported.

"Our goal is to decentralize the authorities, to gradually transfer the functions from the center to the regions. Some of the functions in the center will be reduced and transferred to the regions," the president said.

Yanukovych said that the reform of local government should streamline the system of government in the regions, improve its efficiency, and remove unnecessary levels of government.

"While providing public services you will not have to wait for permission or command from the center. This will be your level of responsibility, and these functions will belong to you, and you will exercise them," he stressed.
