You're reading: Yanukovych says early parliamentary election possible

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said that due to blocking of operation of the Verkhovna Rada the interests of Ukrainians suffer and he does not rule out that early parliamentary election will be held.

“I’m alarmed at the fact that politicians have got absorbed in playing in the Verkhovna Rada, and ordinary people and the country as a whole suffer from this. If the circumstances require I’m ready to realize a tough scenario – early parliamentary election,” he said in an interview with the Vecherny Nikolayev publication issued on April 13, 2013.

“The main responsibility for the fact that the laws that Ukrainians require are not adopted lays on the opposition. Today both the majority and the opposition should show national wisdom and go to mutual compromises in the interests of people. Go and negotiate! Ukraine does not need the non-working parliament. It costs too expensive to the country. If you fail to agree people will elect new lawmakers,” the state of state said.

Answering the question if he signs the laws passed at the laws passed during the “visiting” sitting of Verkhovna Rada on April 4, 2013 he said that the laws passed during the said sitting are socially important.

“I gave an order to lawyers to check whether everything and then I’ll make the decision,” he said.

As reported, on April 11, 2013 during his visit to Mykolaiv Yanukovych said he will dissolve the Verkhovna Rada only as a last resort.

“When they tell me, come on, dissolve the parliament, I can take this tough decision, but only as a last resort. We are not so rich as to pay for constantly holding elections. These will be the elections at our expense,” Yanukovych said.

Ukraine held its last parliamentary election in October, when voters elected the current Verkhovna Rada to five-year terms.

He criticized the conduct of today’s members of parliament.

“Just look at the Verkhovna Rada! Who needs this Rada? I have told them many times to find common ground, find a compromise and reach an agreement,” Yanukovych said.
