The European Union will not sign the association agreement until fully fledged democracy is resumed in Ukraine and the persecution of political opponents is stopped, Front for Change Party leader Arseniy Yatseniuk has said. "It’s absolutely clear that such an agreement will not be signed until fully fledged democracy is resumed in Ukraine, free and fair elections are held, and the political persecution of opponents is stopped in Ukraine," he said at a briefing as part of the fifth Kyiv Security Forum, entitled "Trends in Global Security. Does Democracy Matter?” which took place in Kyiv on Friday.

Yatseniuk noted that Ukraine and the EU had initialed the association agreement, but before its signing "there's a very long road ahead."

He said he was confident that in future the association agreement between Europe and Ukraine would be signed, and that his party would seek this.
