You're reading: Yatseniuk: Ukraine is still not a democracy

Ukraine needs to build strong democratic institutions and achieve political maturity to become a democratic country, as it is still not a democratic state, Front for Change Party Leader Arseniy Yatseniuk has said.

"It is unacceptable when the government is afraid of its people, when the freedom of meetings and demonstrations is prohibited, when the power pursues its competitors at courts," he said at the eighth Yalta Annual Meeting “Ukraine and the World: Common Challenges, Common Future” on Saturday.

In his view, we should start from the constitutional reform to renew the balance of powers in the country and strengthen fight against corruption.

Yatseniuk stressed that Ukraine needs to keep fair and honest elections, therefore he appealed to European politicians to send observers to the forthcoming parliamentary elections that will take place in a year.
