Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, has to be elected on December 12, a members of the Regions Party, Oleksandr Yefremov, has said.

“The Verkhovna Rada chairman has to be elected on December 12,” he said at a press briefing in Kyiv on Monday.

He added that the Regions Party will hold a meeting on Tuesday to select its candidate for the position.

The Verkhovna Rada of the seventh convocation will start its first sitting at 1000 on December 12.

Earlier, first deputy head of the Regions Party faction at the
parliament of the sixth convocation, Mykhailo Chechetov, said that
Acting Justice Minister of Ukraine Oleksandr Lavrynovych has every
chance to chair the Verkhovna Rada of the seventh convocation.

At the same time, he told Interfax-Ukraine that other candidacies for the position are also being considered.

“The candidacies [of Lavrynovych, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of
the sixth convocation Volodymyr Lytvyn, and Head of the Regions Party
parliamentary faction Oleksandr Yefremov] are also being considered,” he
said.

He also said that a Regions Party member is most likely to chair the parliament.
