You're reading: Eighty two percent of Russians approve of Putin’s policy

A recent poll suggests that most Russian citizens think Russia is advancing in the right direction in general, that trust in President Vladimir Putin and support for his work as president have been growing.

82 percent of Russian citizens currently approve of Putin’s performance as president, experts of the Levada Center pollster told Interfax.

The poll was conducted among 1,602 residents aged over 18 in 130 populated areas of 45 regions on April 25 to 28.

Putin’s approval rating went up by 10 percentage points over the month from 72 percent in early March and by 17 percentage points from 65 percent in January.

17 percent of respondents said they were dissatisfied with the president’s performance, compared to 34 percent in January, the poll indicates.

Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev’s performance is welcomed by 60 percent of those surveyed in April, compared to 48 percent in January, and is not approved of by 38 percent, compared to 5 percent in January, the Levada Center said.

58 percent of respondents said that Russia is advancing in the right direction as a whole, compared to 43 percent in January. 26 percent of those polled disagree with this opinion, compared to 41 percent in January.

Respondents were also asked to name 5 or 6 most trusted politicians and public figures. 53 percent named Putin, according to the April poll. The president’s trust rating has grown by almost 20 percentage points over the past 4 months, compared to 34 percent in January.

Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu is second and is currently trusted by 23 percent of citizens, compared to 19percent in January. Next come Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov (17 percent, compared to 6 percent in January), Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev – 16 percent, compared to 13 percent, and leaders of the Liberal Democratic Party Vladimir Zhirinovsky (9 percent vs. 8 percent) and Gennady Zyuganov (7 percent vs. 9 percent).

The top 10 Russian politicians also includes Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia (5 percent), Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin (4 percent), Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko and A Just Russia Party leader Sergei Mironov (3 percent each).

16 percent of respondents do not trust any of the Russian politicians.

Overall, 56 percent of respondents approve of the government’s performance and 49 percent are pleased with how the State Duma is working.

60 percent of those surveyed said they were generally satisfied with the work of their governors (of the Moscow mayor), and 38 percent said they disapproved of their governors’ work, down five percentage points, compared to 43 percent in January.
