Tiraspol - An exit poll conducted in the presidential election of the unrecognized republic of Transdniestria confirms the preliminary report of the Central Elections Commission, which says candidate Yevgeniy Shevchuk is leading in the presidential race, the SOCIUMinform information and analytical center said.

"Shevchuk has 39.7% of the votes and Anatoliy Kaminsky is supported by 28.4% of voters," a center representative told Interfax on Monday referring to the exit poll.

According to the center, Transdniestrian President Igor Smirnov has 22.9% of the votes, Oleg Khorzhan has 4.4%, Andrei Safonov has 0.8%, and Dmitry Soin has 0.6%. A total of 3.2% of voters rejected all of the candidates, SOCIUMinform said.

The center polled 12,000 voters.

The center personnel "faced a lack of understanding by the police while conducting exit polls in Grigoriopol and Dnestrovsk," the source said.

The Transdniestrian Interior Ministry told Interfax on Monday that the police did not record any breach of order or election laws on the ballot day.

"If citizens or elections commissions lodge any complaints, the police will investigate them and report to the media," police spokesperson Alla Ivanchenko said.

Central Elections Commission Secretary Maria Melnik said earlier that ex-speaker Shevchuk was leading in the presidential race. Her information was preliminary.
