TBILISI - Two unidentified men in camouflage on Sunday evening opened automatic fire at the car of local residents, father and son Sebiskveradze, near the Georgian village of Koda bordering South Ossetia.

The father and son told reporters that the gunmen had stopped them on the road near the village and insisted that they leave the car. They disobeyed and drove away at high speed.

Georgian TV channels showed their car punctured by bullets.

The Georgian military police tried to promptly offer assistance and detain the attackers, the father and son said. Shooting on the outskirts of the village continued for over 10 minutes, they said.

In relation to the incident, the Georgian Interior Ministry issued a statement saying that the situation in and around the village is calm.

“Interior Minister Irakly Garibashvili visited Shida Kartli district today and personally inspected all police posts and stations. The situation is fully under control. As for reports of shooting from the territory controlled by the Ossetian side, it was a domestic conflict. As we learned, the incident was soon stopped by the Ossetian side itself,” the ministry statement says.
