Farm animals have died following an outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) in Kuban, Starominsky district in the Krasnodar Territory, the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry's Main Directorate for the region told Interfax on Wednesday.

"Five pigs died in at the Bolshevik farm in the Starominsky district on October 25. Two other pigs had to be destroyed. Livestock deaths continued on October 26, when 13 more pigs died," a source said.

The Kropotkinskaya veterinary laboratory "took samples from the carcasses which tested positive for African Swine Fever," he said.

A state of emergency has been imposed in the Starominsky district due to the ASF outbreak, the Southern Regional Center of the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry told Interfax.

"The emergency situations commission and the district administration imposed a state of emergency after positive ASF test results were obtained from the biomaterial taken from five dead pigs at the Bolshevik farm in the Starominsky district in Kuban," the spokesperson said.

All necessary steps are being taken to prevent further spread of the disease, he said.
