RIGA, Latvia (AP) — Latvian lawmakers have voted overwhelmingly to dismiss the country's anti-corruption chief.
Thursday’s vote came after prosecutors produced a special report concluding that Normunds Vilnitis had committed numerous violations, mainly inefficiency.
The report recommended his dismissal, and 82 members of the 100-seat legislature voted in favor of firing him.
Vilnitis replaced former KNAB chief Aleksejs Loskutovs, who was himself ousted in 2009 over missing funds.
Initial attempts to fire Loskutovs led to street riots, resulting in then-Prime Minister Aigars Kalvitis’ resignation.
Latvia’s outgoing president recently called a referendum to dissolve parliament because he accused lawmakers of being soft on corruption.
It will be held July 23.
