You're reading: Lukashenko blames population for devaluation of Belarusian ruble

Minsk – Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said that the country's authorities had not planned a devaluation of the national currency at the end of 2014, but the population had done everything for this to happen.

“We were not going to devalue the national currency. And I said at that time that if you keep visiting currency exchange offices, you would push us towards this and we would have to allow the national currency to float freely in order to avoid emptying our gold and forex reserves,” Lukashenko said

“What complaints do you have now? I knew that you, true Belarusians, would not listen to me. Last year you bought 60,000 cars. In this case, you took everything out of Russia,” the president said.

“What kind of poverty in Belarus are you speaking about? There is no place for an apple to fall on the roads,” he said.
