Chisinau - An unknown man planned to throw a Molotov cocktail at the Moldovan prime minister's motorcade during German Chancellor Angela Merkel's visit to Chisinau on Wednesday.

The man planned to hurl the Molotov cocktail at around 2100 on Wednesday as Moldovan Premier Vlad Filat was on his way back after an official dinner held in Merkel’s honor in Cricova village’s famous wine cellars, but the bottle started to burn in his bag. The man was detained. An investigation is under way.

Up to 2,000 Moldovan policemen and special service officers maintained security during Merkel’s visit to Chisinau.

Merkel moved across Chisinau in an armored Audi car specially leased by Moldovan security services in Germany.
