You're reading: Medvedev: Calls for unilateral review of gas contracts unacceptable

Gorki, near Moscow, May 30 (Interfax) - All sorts of calls for unilateral measures to review gas agreements must be superimposed on the fabric of the existing agreements, and not otherwise, said Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

"At your behest I have met with President Yanukovych of Ukraine, and we exchanged opinions about trends that are taking shape in the gas market," Gazprom chief executive Alexei Miller said during a meeting with Medvedev on Saturday.

Miller said he had told Yanukovych that "the current contract is strictly based on the market price formula."

"In the course of the meeting we discussed potential new forms of cooperation, which may bring Russian-Ukrainian collaboration to a new level," the Gazprom chief said.

"I would like you to use two points as your basis in the future," said Medvedev.

"The first point is that we must comply with the current agreement. This applies to the Russian Fede ration, to Gazprom and to our Ukrainian partners. And all kinds of appeals for unilateral measures, revisions of any kind must take account of the current agreements. Nothing else would do," Medvedev said.

"And it is absolutely fair that you stated this [at the meeting with Yanukovych]," the Russian president said, addressing Miller.

"And the second point is that for us Ukraine is not some strange, remote partner but a very close, fraternal country, a country that has many economic problems at the moment. And President Yanukovych and I have come to an agreement to consider use of some advanced forms of cooperation, including cooperation in the gas industry," Medvedev said.

"So remain in contact and keep working with your partners," he added.
