Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has congratulated Vladimir Putin on having been elected new Russian president.

"First of all, I would like to congratulate you on your election as the president of the Russian Federation. The Central Elections Commission summed up the results yesterday. The result is absolutely convincing, and it shows that the citizens of our country trust the course that our state has pursued in the past several years," Medvedev said.

"We have truly been creating foundations of a new economy, modernizing it, and changing the technological setup of late," he said.

"Naturally, a lot of attention has been paid to the development of the social sector, although it is obvious that there are a lot of various aspects here. Our state has also faced and is facing a very important goal of ensuring security, defense capability, and, of course, a proper level of relations with other countries on our planet," Medvedev said.

"I am sure that all these priorities will remain in place in your future work, and I would like to sincerely wish you as much success as possible in this. Once again, congratulations on your election," he said.
