The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) faced a serious crisis in its confidence following the Russian-Georgian conflict in August 2008, but it has already been overcome, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said.

"We faced a serious confidence crisis in August 2008, when a conflict between Russia and Georgia arose. Therefore we can only welcome it that this has been overcome due to the Corfu process," Merkel said at an OSCE summit session in Astana on Wednesday.

"If we look at the NATO-Russia summit in Lisbon or at cooperation between Russia and the European Union or Russia and the OSCE, we can see that confidence can be gradually restored," Merkel said.

"I think the OSCE partnership has shown that we can trust each other," she said.
