MOSCOW (AP) — Russia is protesting the treatment of a British lawmaker's assistant accused of spying for Russia by UK authorities as "unacceptable."

Ekaterina Zatuliveter, a former staffer for Liberal Democrat lawmaker Mike Hancock, was released on bail and faced no charges after last month’s arrest. But she still has to obey strict bail conditions while waiting for a hearing on her deportation in October.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry said Friday that the decision "dooms" Zatuliveter to almost a year of conditions "little different from house arrest."

It called on immigration officials to either charge her without something or to lift the restrictions on her movements.

Zatuliveter denies any wrongdoing.
