You're reading: NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative says creation of NATO training center in Georgia does not pose threat to Russia

The opening of a NATO training center in Georgia is not aimed against Russia, James Appathurai, NATO Secretary General's Special Representative for the Caucasus and Central Asia, said in an interview with Georgia's Channel 1 television.

Appathurai said NATO regards this center as an opportunity to give the Georgian military, partners of the Alliance, good training and make them compatible with NATO. He said the opening of the center is a clear signal of partnership and cooperation between NATO and Georgia.

Appathurai said Russia should not take this center in Georgia as a threat and it does not mean that the Georgian military trained there will attack anyone.Georgian Prime Minister Irakly Garibashvili earlier told reporters the command point of the joint training center will open in one of the country’s military bases within a week. The opening ceremony will be attended by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
