Moscow - Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin is set to continue efforts to implement the Eurasian Union project, his Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov said.

"Certainly, the creation of the Eurasian Union will be one of the key priorities of Putin’s work over the next six years, especially, given the positive dynamics of the unification process and the big amount of work that has been carried out over the four year that he has led the government," Peskov was quoted as saying by the Kommersant newspaper on Wednesday.

Russia wants to build the new union according to new principles, the newspaper said. "The Eurasian Union countries must preserve political sovereignty but management of the economies must be integrated to the utmost," the premier’s press secretary said.

The target model closest to the Eurasian Union is the European Union, he said. In particular, Moscow would like to create a single currency of the Eurasian Union with a single issuing center.

The ideas expressed by Putin in his article in the Izvestiya newspaper had not been previously discussed with the leaders of either Kazakhstan or Belarus, Peskov also said.
