You're reading: Poll: More Moldovans back accession to CSTO than entry into NATO

CHISINAU - More than 50% of Moldovan citizens would vote against their country's accession to NATO if such a referendum were to be held this coming Sunday, according to the results of the Public Opinion Barometer survey.

Possible plans to join the alliance would receive support from 17.1% of those polled, 17.4% were undecided, and 9.5% said they would not take part in such a referendum at all.

Over 50% of respondents spoke of Moldova’s neutrality as the best way to maintain national security, and 21.3% of those polled said they would support a possible decision to join the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO).

Thirty-nine of respondents backed Moldova’s neutrality, and 24% spoke in favor of ties with the European Union, 22% the Customs Union, formed by Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, 8.9% Russia, and 0.8% the United States, the poll results show.
