Russia has asked Ukraine to give it control of near-border territories in Luhansk region, which is crossed by the Rossosh-Millerovo section of railway line, which serves as rail link between Russia's south and central parts, the press service of Russian Railways (RZD) has said.

The press service said that the Russian-Ukrainian border lies in the immediate vicinity of the railway track (on the almost 30-kilometer section Garmashevka-Mikhailovo-Aleksandrovka, which enters the territory of Ukraine several times). It is proposed that the Russian-Ukrainian demarcation commission redistribute the border territories so that the sections are located in Russia.

The company said that it would welcome the passing of a mutually beneficial decision on the ownership problem in line with international law by the empowered bodies of Russia and Ukraine.

According to the report, now a bilateral interagency group is working on a draft intergovernmental agreement on the conditions of the transfer of rights to those facilities of railway infrastructure, which will be declared in Ukraine’s ownership.

RZD said that when the Soviet Union collapsed, the same situation appeared not only with Ukraine. Eleven sections of Russian track a total of 800 kilometers long now pass through the territory of Kazakhstan.
