You're reading: Russian defense minister states permanent readiness of nuclear triad

Contemporary challenges and threats to national security require the armed forces' readiness for a rapid and efficient response under any circumstances, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said. He made the statement on May 8 while reporting a routine troop control practice to the Russian president. "This event is a major stage of the Russian Armed Forces' training in 2014, which is conducted once every six months consistent with your order," Shoigu told the president.

“Definitely, the strategic nuclear forces are the national security guarantor. Our nuclear triad maintains permanent combat preparedness and undergoes planned re-equipment with modern missile systems with enhanced combat capacities,” the Russian defense minister said.

In his words, an emphasis has been put on upgrading the national aerospace defense network, building up the potential of high-precision weapons and creating a single information space.

“These priorities are determined by the state armament program for the period until 2021 and plans of the Armed Forces development and equipment,” the Russian defense minister noted.

The achievement of these primary objectives will guarantee defense of the Russian Federation and its allies, he emphasized.

“Today’s training will demonstrate combat capacities of formations and military units of the strategic offensive and defensive forces,” the minister added.
