You're reading: Russian journalist may have been beaten for his blog postings

One of the main motives for the attack on Kommersant reporter Oleg Kashin is related to his statements posted on blogs, the Kommersant newspaper said on Wednesday.

"The Investigative Committee is not commenting officially on the inquiry because information leaks into the media have already damaged the case significantly," the newspaper said.

At the same time, a source told Kommersant that, "one of the priority theories of the attack on the journalist is related to his blog postings, however finding out who might have beaten him and for what will require a lot of time because Kashin was writing on several Internet portals at the same time."

Kashin’s professional activity and his civic position are the priority lines of investigation, spokesman for the Investigative Committee Vladimir Markin said earlier.

Kashin was savagely beaten up early on November 6 near his home on Pyatnitskaya street downtown Moscow in the vicinity of the Kremlin.

The attack is being investigated on charges of an organized murder. It is believed to be connected with the reporter’s work. The investigation is proceeding under the supervision of the prosecutor general and interior minister. President Dmitry Medvedev ordered a thorough investigation into the incident.
