You're reading: Russian units stationed in Crimea to be reinforced

Rostov-on-Don - New naval and coastal units of the Russian Black Sea Fleet will be deployed in Crimea and formerly reduced units will be restored, head of the Southern Military District Staff's naval department Rear Admiral Anatoly Dolgov said.

“There is a federal target program stipulating the development of the
Black Sea Fleet bases for the period until 2020. The program costs 90
billion rubles, budget funds included. About 40 billion rubles have
already been spent,” Dolgov said at a press conference at the Interfax
Rostov-on-Don office on Thursday, July 24.

“Units stationed on the Crimean Peninsula will be reinforced,” the rear admiral continued.

New units will be formed and formerly reduced units, among them the 30th surface ship division, will be restored, he noted.

There will be new coastal forces, as well, such as a coastal defense
brigade and an artillery regiment. Naval Aviation will be supplied with
new aircraft and the fourth air defense command and reconnaissance units
will be reinforced.

The development of the Novorossiysk naval base had been planned
before the Crimean events, but that program would now have to be
reviewed, the admiral said.

“Alongside the development of the Novorossiysk base, we are paying
huge attention to the main base of the Black Sea Fleet, Sevastopol. New
compounds and training facilities will be built there. The work is being
done ahead of schedule,” Dolgov said.
