GORKI – Slovakia wants to preserve the transit of Russian energy supplies to Europe, say materials for a meeting between Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.

“In connection with the implementation by Russia of projects to build new pipelines, Slovakia is concerned about the stability of supplies and transit of Russian energy. Bratislava would like to preserve the country’s key role in Russian transit to the EU,” the materials say.

A contract to supply Russian gas to Slovakia in the period to 2029 was signed in November 2008. In 2013, gas supplies to Slovakia totaled 4.8 billion cubic meters (bcm), and transit – 39.9 bcm. Last year, Slovakia received 4.4 bcm of gas and transit totaled 35.8 bcm.

Since March 2015, Slovakia has been supplying gas in full reverse mode to Ukraine via the Vojany-Uzhgorod pipeline, capacity up to 14.5 bcm per year.
