You're reading: The Moscow Times: Russia won’t allow adoptions by gay couples, Ombudsman says

Gay couples will not be allowed to adopt Russian orphans, children's ombudsman Pavel Astakhov said in an interview published Tuesday.

“This position is already expressed in our main laws: the Constitution and the Family Code. It is clearly stated that the union between a man and a woman is considered marriage. We do not have any other options. Period.” Astakhov said in comments carried by Interfax.

Astakhov’s comments came in response to the news that France’s government is currently considering a bill giving same-sex couples the right to adopt.
