ROSTOV-ON-DON, Russia (AP) — Authorities in the restive Russian province of Ingushetia say police have killed three suspected rebels in a shootout near the republic's principal city.

The Ingiush Interior Ministry said the shootout took place Thursday when the suspected militants were discovered in an abandoned building on the outskirts of Nazran. The ministry said the militants opened fire after police ordered them to give up their weapons.

Ingushetia is part of the Russian Caucasus region, which is plagued by clashes between police and soldiers and militants inspired by the insurgency in Chechnya.
