You're reading: Turnout in Transdniestrian election reached 56.65%

The final turnout in the presidential election in the self-proclaimed republic of Transdniestria was 56.65% as at 10 p.m. local time on Sunday.

According to the Central Elections Commission (CEC), the turnout was the highest in Dubasari region at 62.75%. In Tiraspol it was 55.77%. The lowest turnout was recorded in Bender at 53.56%.

The minimal required turnout was 50%.

There were six presidential candidates: the incumbent leader of the republic Igor Smirnov, the incumbent and former speakers of parliament Anatoly Kaminski and Yevgeny Shevchuk, Communist party leader Oleg Khorzhan, Breakthrough party leader Dmitry Soin and political analyst Andrei Safonov.

Victory in the first round required a majority of 50%+1 votes.
