UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has highly assessed Russia's efforts in combating terrorism, noting Russia's close interaction with the United States in this issue.

Speaking at a meeting with Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev in Kuala Lumpur, Ban said that he would like to give high marks to the leading role of Russia, which is working together with the U.S. in order to eliminate the root causes of terrorism.

Hopefully, these two countries’ joint work will continue, the UN secretary general said, adding that he meant, among other factors, the worsening security situation in Syria.

The recent initiative put forth by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and supported by 18 international organizations and countries gave a powerful political impetus to the search for a political solution to the Syrian crisis, he said.

Hopefully, when working with other members of the UN Security Council, Russia will demonstrate its solidarity in this issue, as it has already done before, Ban said.
