Moscow - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and UN/LAS envoy for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi are expected to discuss the prospects of a diplomatic settlement of the Syrian crisis in Moscow on Monday.
Brahimi is visiting Moscow on the last day of the Muslim Feast of the Sacrifice for the time of which the government and opposition in Syria concluded a ceasefire agreement.
The meeting is expected to discuss possible practical measures to settle the Syrian crisis as soon as possible, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said at a press briefing last Friday.
“We are certain that all collective efforts should abide by the Geneva Communique, which was agreed upon at a meeting of the Action Group on June 30 this year,” Lukashevich said.
Earlier Brahimi insisted on a ceasefire in Syria for the time of the Feast of the Sacrifice. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and the governments of many countries supported the initiative. Brahimi also voiced hope that a temporary ceasefire would develop into a long-term truce.
The Russian Foreign Ministry praised the readiness of the Syrian government to observe the ceasefire. “The fact that Damascus confirmed its readiness to work towards stopping the bloodshed, paving the way for a political solution to the internal Syrian crisis through a comprehensive dialogue, is of paramount significance,” a Foreign Ministry statement posted on the ministry website says.
