President of the Basketball Federation of Ukraine (BFU) Oleksandr Volkov has said that Ukraine has until May 2015 to decide whether the country wants to host the men’s European Basketball Championship in 2017.

“Right now, we have the right to host EuroBasket 2017. The guarantees for holding the championship must be given by top public officials. Of course, there are other matters to attend to right now. We’ll be waiting, trying to meet with country’s leaders and to find a joint solution on what to do with EuroBasket in Ukraine,” he said at a press conference on Dec.16.

Volkov noted that FIBA Europe is waiting for an answer from Ukraine.

“The FIBA Europe meeting will be held in May, thus we need to solve the issue by May,” he noted.

As reported, on June 13, the FIBA Europe Board decided to relocate EuroBasket from Ukraine. However, the FIBA Europe board decided to grant Ukraine the right to host EuroBasket in 2017 instead of 2015.

During the meeting with FIBA Europe President Turgay Demirel on July 7, 2014, Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko said he hoped that Ukraine could host EuroBasket 2017.
