The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine on August 1 is to review the possibility of increasing the prizes awarded to Ukrainian athletes for winning Olympic medals, Ukrainian Premier Mykola Azarov has said.

“The government will review the sizes of bonuses for our Olympic athletes,” he told journalists in Kyiv on Tuesday.

Azarov did not specify by how much the government was planning to
increase the bonuses, and added that they will not be lower than that of
Russian athletes, and perhaps even higher.

“Russian athletes receive $123,500 for a gold medal,” he said.

The Ukrainian PM expressed hope that the Ukrainian team will show good results at the Olympics.

As reported, Ukrainian athletes were to receive $100,000 for a gold
medal, $75,000 for silver medal, and $50,000 for bronze medal during the
2012 Summer Olympics.
