President of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine Serhiy Bubka has said that Ukraine expected the result that Ukrainian athletes have achieved at the Summer Olympics in London.
"Twenty-seven medals were a surprise to us at the last Summer Games. Frankly speaking, we were not even prepared for it. But the Olympics are extremely unpredictable competitions at which anything can happen. In London, as you can see, we have a lot of those who were in fourth or fifth places. Competition has increased due to the fact that the geography of the countries fighting for the medals has substantially expanded. But we still remain in the same range - about twenty medals. We expected such a number of medals after world championships that were held a year before the Olympics," he said in an interview with the Sport-Express in Ukraine newspaper.
Bubka said he was not surprised that women had won the largest number of medals for Ukraine at the Olympics.
"Women saved us in many situations, and we are very pleased that they are so pleasantly surprising everybody at the Olympics," he said.
