KYIV, Ukraine – Dynamo Kyiv won its 14th domestic league championship and first title in six years on May 17 with a 1-0 score over Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk. The achievement marks the end of Shakhtar Donetsk’s reign atop the premier league having taken first in the last five seasons starting in 2009-2010.

Defender Domagoj Vida sent a grounder
through from inside the box in the 84th minute to clinch first place two rounds
before the 26-round season ends in front of more than 50,000 spectators at
Olympic Stadium.

Undefeated so far, Dynamo is seven points
ahead of second-place Skakhtar Donetsk with 19 wins and five draws. It plays
Lviv Karpaty away on May 24 and Metalurh Zaporizhya at home on May 30.

Dnipro coach Myron Markevych rested his
core team in the fixture, including midfielder Ruslan Rotan, left winger Yevhen
Konopolyanka, and defender Douglas Silva, presumably to avoid fatigue and
injury ahead of the May 27 Europa League final against Spain’s Sevilla in
Warsaw.

This is Dynamo manager Serhiy Rebrov’s
first domestic league title and first full season as coach.
