LONDON — Civic officials say vandals have defaced a mailbox that was painted gold to celebrate Olympic heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis.

The Royal Mail has vowed to turn one of the distinctive red postboxes gold in the home town of every British gold medal winner.

In
some places the painting has become a mini-event in itself, and crowds
turned up to watch a mailbox being transformed for Ennis on Sunday, the
day after she won gold, in her home town of Sheffield, northern
England.

City officials said Wednesday that the mailbox had later
been defaced with graffiti. Postal officials quickly dispatched a worker
to repaint it.
