You're reading: Lucescu backs idea of creating CIS football championship

Shakhtar Donetsk manager Mircea Lucescu has supported the idea of creating a unified CIS football championship.

“You may not remember – you are too young… But a year or two after I joined the team I proposed a similar idea. There was a special tournament in Israel. And it was something like the Super Cup between strong teams from Ukraine and Russia – for example, Dynamo Kyiv, CSKA, Spartak … There would be a good competition. I think that it would be a great thing to play approximately at the level of the championships of Italy or Spain,” the club’s press service quoted him as saying.

“If you know, the Netherlands and Belgium want to play in the same league and have a good competition. Why not do the same? A similar championship would be good,” Lucescu said.

As reported, the idea of creating a unified CIS football championship has been actively discussed in Russia at the proposal of Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller.
