You're reading: Lviv’s 2022 Winter Olympic bid gains ground

After the Stockholm city council on Jan. 17 rejected the Swedish capital's 2022 Winter Olympic bid, Ukraine’s chances slightly improved by default.

The aborted
bid means that five cities, including the western Ukrainian city of Lviv,
remain in the race to host the 2022 winter games.

According to
a ranking
of Winter Olympic bids
conducted jointly by Around the Rings, an
authoritative online news source on the Olympics, and TSE Consulting, Ukraine ranks
fourth, topping only the Kazakh city of Almaty.

Beijing
(China) leads as the favorite, followed by Oslo (Norway) and then Krakow
(Poland).

Another ranking,
conducted by Sportcal, a leading sports market researcher, which analyzes the
success of nations in attracting major sports events, placed Ukraine 49 out of
78 countries, but last among fellow Winter Olympic bidders. China leads as the
global sports nation, followed by Poland (16th), Norway (22nd), and Almaty
(27th).

Lviv
submitted its bid in November.

According to the website of the
International Olympic Committee, the organization’s executive committee will
select the host city for the 2022 Olympics at the IOC session in Kuala Lumpur,
Malaysia, on July 31, 2014.
