You're reading: Platini still against idea of united Ukrainian-Russian league

Moscow - UEFA President Michel Platini has said he is skeptical of the idea of uniting the football championships of Ukraine and Russia.

He said that there is no acute need for such a step.

“There are leagues and clubs with big financial problems. What can they do? They can meet and take decisions. And if it’s a matter of life and death, I have nothing against it. But it’s not so in the case of Russia. Of course, we will look at the experience of the united women’s league of Belgium and the Netherlands. But now I’m against such an idea,” he said at a news conference after a meeting of the UEFA Executive Committee in Sofia on Thursday.

As reported, the idea of creating a unified CIS football league was put forward by CEO of Russian gas giant Gazprom Alexei Miller. The strategy of the proposed tournament was announced at a meeting of the Unified Football Championship independent non-profit organization in Moscow on February 18, 2013.
