Ukraine's Yana Shemyankina has won a gold medal in the women's individual epee fencing competition at the London Olympics.
Shemyakia defeated the defending champion Britta Heidemann of Germany 9-8 on July 30. The victory came after an hour-long delay in the semifinals due to an appeal by South Korea against an earlier victory by Heidemann over their fencer Shim A-lam.
